Working in Trondheim

Historic Trondheim and its imposing Nidaros Cathedral attracted Christian pilgrims from all over northern Europe. As the former Viking capital of Norway, Trondheim is steeped in memories. Modern Trondheim still attracts people, but these days they’re more likely to be a student or a scientific researcher.

Living in Trondheim

Trondheim is the largest city and regional capital of central Norway, with a population of around 175,000. The local economy is led by education, research and knowledge. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), together with various research institutes like SINTEF and the University Hospital, attract students, academics and researchers to Trondheim. Because of this, the city has a youthful feel to it with many bars and restaurants. The suburbs are almost exclusively residential, so those preferring a quiet life are well catered for too.

Where to live: From upmarket apartments and house shares in the city centre to the spectacular views from the Byåsen hills, we take a look at some of the most popular areas of Trondheim for expats to live in.

Public Transport: With an integrated system of bus, rail, tram and ferry, Trondheim is easy to get around on public transport. The system is managed by AtB and there is a good system of online information and apps for journey planning, timetables, and ticketing. Here's our complete guide to the system.

Shopping: Get to grips with the retail options open to you as a resident of Trondheim. Find out where all the malls are and where you might find that must-have item. In our guide to shopping in Trondheim, we also run through the independent shops downtown and which out-of-town malls are worth travelling to.

What's On: For current events such as concerts, exhibitions and galleries, check out the city's English language lifestyle publication, The List. Pick up a copy of the print magazine (produced six times per year) from the library, the information desk at Trondheim Torg, Sirkus Shopping, and many of the city's cafes. You can also access the latest event listings online.
