Norwegian football

I'm writing a book and I need your help!

Regular readers will know I'm a football fan and have taken an interest in the Norwegian obsession with English football. That article is one of the most popular on the website, along with the interview with Trevor Morley. Many Norwegian and English football fans have been in touch to say how much they enjoyed those articles, and I certainly enjoyed researching and writing them. I'd like to explore the Norwegian love affair with English football further, but this blog isn't the place for it.

I'm currently working with Technoport, an innovation organisation here in Trondheim. I'm managing their website, blog, social media and international media work ahead of an innovation event this April largely focusing on crowdfunding and crowdsourcing. From researching these topics, I'm convinced both are potential future tools for web publishers and authors. As is the Technoport way, I'm not just going to talk about these topics, I'm going to do something about it.

Scoring in Norway is an idea I've had since writing the original post on English football. It was also the name of my fantasy football team back in the 2011/12 season!

The book will explore the beginnings of the Norwegian obsession from the early television broadcasts, right up to the present day. It will examine the Norwegian invasion of the Premier League in the 90s and the new Solskjær-led wave. It will look at the supporters clubs of English teams based in Norway, bigger than the membership of most Norwegian football clubs. Finally, it will look at what the future holds for the domestic game here in Norway.

Why crowdfund?

Writing a book in this day and age is a risky business. I'm going to self-publish an eBook and utilise a print-on-demand service for print copies, subject to demand.  I will be travelling around the country to interview ex-footballers, managers, pundits and the supporters clubs. Months of research will go into this book and all this costs money.

Crowdfunding books is becoming more popular as self-publishing replaces the legacy publishing model. Interested readers pay up-front and in return get a copy of the book before its release, updates about the book's development, plus some other bonuses.

Quite simply, crowdfunding removes the risk, and ensures the book will get written.

Why crowdsource?

I know the basics of the story, and the type of people I want to interview. However, there are holes in my research and I want to involve my future readers as much as possible in the development of the book. Crowdsourcing means using combined knowledge to solve problems – in this case the holes in the research. I'll ask my readers for specific memories and stories of their first English football match. I'll ask them to vote on who I should interview, on which supporters clubs I should feature, and more.

Quite simply, crowdsourcing will result in a better book.
