Stavanger City Guide

Stavanger is a big name in the Norwegian Oil & Gas industry, attracting talented engineers from all over the world. In addition to this, cruise ships unload thousands of visitors every single day, so the city has a very international feel to it.

Living in Stavanger

Despite its reputation as Norway's oil capital, Stavanger is a relatively quiet place to live as much of the industry is out of sight of the city itself. The picturesque region surrounding Stavanger offers much for those into the outdoor lifestyle, from golden beaches to world-famous fjords and hikes. The University of Stavanger offers a wide variety of opportunities for international students especially in the areas of science, social sciences, and humanities.

Accommodation is pricey in Stavanger itself, so nearby Sandnes is a popular choice for expats looking for better value accommodation in the region. The two cities are linked by regular bus and train services, so in practice there is very little difference between living in Sandnes or living in a suburb of Stavanger. Here's more about life in Sandnes.

Getting around

Public transport in and around Stavanger is predominantly by bus, although passenger ferries and a commuter rail line are important elements of the network. Transportation in the region is coordinated and managed by Kolumbus. For more information on services, see our complete guide to public transport in Stavanger.
