University student life in Norway

Podcast episode 15: A chat with American student Kelsey Barnhill about university life in Norway.

For episode 15 of the Life in Norway Show I'm joined by Life in Norway columnist Kelsey Barnhill. Originally from California, Kelsey currently calls Moss her home as she studies for a master's degree at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

Almost every day I receive emails from people from all over the world who are considering applying for university in Norway. Because I've never studied here, I can only offer general advice. But Kelsey can speak from true experience!

We talk about why she chose Norway, how college life is different here, and some of the things you bear in mind if you're considering applying for a university place.

What is studying in Norway really like?

The questions I receive centre on how easy or difficult it is to get a study permit if you get accepted to a Norwegian institution, plus of course, how much money someone will need to sustain themselves.

I ask Kelsey these questions plus ask for her own story, her experiences, and her advice both for new students and those thinking about applying to a Norwegian university.

Some of the topics we cover on the show include:

  • Kelsey's surprising first impressions of Norway
  • How the structure of university degrees differs in Norway
  • How daily life in a Norwegian university differs from the USA
  • Whether a student gets much spare time in Norway
  • How a non-EU student can qualify for a study permit
  • If it's possible to get a part-time job before you arrive
  • Whether or not you need to learn Norwegian
